By django , August 10, in Logic Pro. Hi guys hope you are all well. I have always had issues with the ES2 not triggering from a starting point at all My example so none are confused. Setup bare es2, only 1 saw wave, you can download this patch from on here, or simply select tutorial bass, clean i think. From what i can remember the ES2 will reset the trigger of all targets to start at the same spot via the Hard or Soft trigger setting? The Oscillator start setting is controlled via the Oscillator start menu options, free, soft or hard, and from memory hard is supposed to trigger the start of the oscillation to the same point?

Even with the oscillator start point set on free by default you will hear that the oscillator start point is actually triggering from the start. The oscillator set to soft or hard makes no difference when set to LFO 1. However, if you set the third modulation box’s target to LFO 2, you will hear that the oscillation will not re-trigger at the start point, but will oscillate ‘free’ and indeed, once again, it doesn’t matter if the oscillator start point is free, soft or hard.

From the test i have given the example of which i hope is clear enough it seems that only LFO1 can really provide a starting trigger and not LFO 2.

Not only this but the free, soft and hard seem to play no role in all of this Got some waveforms I switched any modulation and the filter off, pulled “Sine Level”, effects and distortion to Zero and switched the first oscillator to sawtooth and the other ones off Then I recorded a single note and had it frozen with the settings “Free”, “Soft” and “Hard”, taking a screenshot of the visualized freeze file each time, and here you are:. In fact I tried it several times, and the results were all different; here’s just one example.

The “Soft” sawtooth starts at Zero and goes up to the maximum, so we can say it starts at its natural zero crossing. BTW I would have expected it to start at the other zero crossing point in the middle of the ramp – wouldn’t that be even softer? Finally the “Hard” sawtooth starts somewhere close to the end of the ramp, close to its negative maximum ok, some call this “minimum”, but I think the sign doesn’t count here.

It did so any time I tried, so there is a difference to the “free” sawtooth that can casually start at this point, too. I did the same test, playing 4 notes in each mode, single oscillator sawtooth wave, and confirm exactly the same behavior:. Soft : the start point always began at zero and the waveform was generated in the positive direction. Hard : the start point always started from zero, then produced what would be the “end” of a complete wave cycle, with values ramping down ringing, actually to the lowest negative value from which begins a regular pattern of waveform cycles from that point forward.

Yeah there was some confusion here from me about what i thought osc start does, my apoligies, thanks for clarifying guys. A Squelch’s setup requires that cutoff and pitch must go up and down opposite ways pitch up cutoff down or vice verca to the same values of Oscillation.

This method proves tricky unique with the LFO’s the ES2 has to offer, being that by the sounds of things LFO 1 starts its oscillation at the same point everytime and will stay like that whilst LFO 2 is modulating lets say pitch and is a ‘Free” type of oscillator. One question to workaround this.

Can i fine tune the movement of a node in Automation? Great to clarify that LFO 1 is the only oscillator that truly starts from where the green amount slider is placed. But at the same time a little dissapointing because I can’t use LFO 2 to be in sync with the track and also start from where the green slider starts.

But you can create a third one using the Vector Envelope with loop. It will be polyphonic like LFO1, meaning the wave it produces will start when the corresponding note is triggered, but you can create a wave that starts at the level you want it to.

Yeah there was some confusion here from me about what i thought osc start does, my apoligies, thanks for clarifying guys I was having problems all with the Squelch’s i have made on the ES2 because i always use LFO1 and LFO2. My apoligies once again maybe i should change the subject see the little chain inbetween cutoff and resonance on the ES2?

So we’re talking LFO’s, not oscillators. In that case, why not use the same LFO for both pitch and cutoff? For pitch, modulate with a positive amount. For cutoff, modulate with a negative amount. Would that work? Thanks once again Jope and Ski. Jope Posted August 11, Have fun with ES2 and Logic!
